Working and remaining silent: forum theatre

Cases of human trafficking right here in our own backyard, at the heart of our daily lives? Through forum theatre, we aim to bring people together and spark dialogue around an urgent issue: the vulnerability of migrant agricultural workers. This play challenges decision-makers, local communities, consumers, and professionals. If we were to consider all facets of the situation, what would we see? What could we do?

A project carried out in cooperation between CATHII and the Quebec Network of Migrant Agricultural Workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Forum theatre is a form of participatory theatre that stages situations of conflict, injustice, or hardship experienced in society. It allows for collective reflection on a problem and the exploration, through role-playing, of different possibilities for change.

This piece is addressed to any community that opposes modern forms of slavery in our society. We particularly want to reach students who will soon be encountering situations of exploitation: law, political science, criminology, police science, social work, health sciences, etc. It allows us to approach the issue of the exploitation of migrant agricultural workers (and by extension, all forms of worker exploitation) without preconceived answers, with a perspective grounded in compassion and playfulness. Whether familiar with the issues of human trafficking or not, everyone will find something of value in it.

We are not opposed to hiring migrant workers in Canada. It represents a valuable opportunity and a positive experience for many people. However, we observe that cases of exploitation highlight the need to prevent human trafficking and support victims in the current practices. This violates human dignity. We call for collective solutions.

A performance lasts approximately an hour and a half. After a short introduction, the play is performed by our professional actors. Then, the facilitator invites the audience to suggest and experiment with alternatives to the characters' actions, opening the door, through play, to an in-depth discussion. Additional resources may be invited to participate in the discussion.

For now, only our first performance is planned, but we hope to travel throughout Quebec wherever groups or citizens invite us. Contact us!

We've created a play with minimal performance costs, but we still need to find funding for the tour. We can work with you to find and secure donations and grants. Get in touch!
